WATERPROOFING

During the heavy monsoons of Goa, rain water continuously batters the roofs of all constructed structures in Goa. Weak areas within the structure which are open to the vagaries of climatic conditions and not protected by waterproofing can create inlets for water to seep into the constructed structure. Thus rain water can flow behind numerous structures to the inner quarters of the building.
Property owners in Goa are very well aware of the destructive force of continuous falling water, day and night for almost 4 months regularly every year.

What is Waterproofing?
Waterproofing is the making an object or building waterproof or water-resistant. In the construction industry of Goa, every newly built structure needs waterproofing as concrete by itself will not be watertight or impermeable on its own but concrete is easily waterproofed with chemical additives.

The normal systems of waterproofing in Goa involve 'membranes'. This relies on the application of one or more layers of membrane (available in various materials: e.g., bitumen, silicate, PVC, EPDM etc.) that act as a obstruction & obstacle between the water and the building structure, thus preventing the means of access of water.

New membrane materials developed by the Waterproofing industry in Goa seek to overcome weakness in older methods like PVC and HDPE. Normally, new waterproofing technology in waterproof membranes relies on polymer-based materials that are enormously adhesive to create a seamless barrier around the outside of a building structure.

Waterproofing or Damp – proofing?

Waterproofing is the treatment of a building surface to prevent the passage of liquid water in the presence of hydrostatic pressure.

Damp-proofing is the treatment of a surface to retard the absorption of moisture in the absence of hydrostatic pressure.

Many times structures in Goa are waterproofed externally and damp-proofed internally to give the complete building structure an envelope of protection.

Water proofing solutions by Parkar Construction of Ponda installs a waterproofing system which prevents the maximum passage of liquid rain water or other water in the presence of hydrostatic pressure. Necessary Structural repairs or protection as needed is undertaken. An effective and unclogged drainage system has to be working to reduce hydrostatic pressure.

Water ingression (entering of water) can happen from the roof, from sideways (the part of the structure facing the west or towards the sea) and also from the ground above (ground level water table).

Water ingress in structures in Goa can happen from seepage through joints or cracks that are not filled in time, permeation, wick action, salts in drainage, under structure permeation.

Rain water of Goa penetrates concrete structures through openings at large voids in the building, hairline cracks and small cracks in the walls, at weak joints, and in Concrete structures, Capillary actions sucks water into pores, Hydrostatic pressure forces water into pores.

Where Waterproofing is needed in Goa?

Positive Side Waterproofing:
Positive side is same side of the structure as the source of the water. Intended to stop water before it has a chance to enter the structure and cause structural damage.
Negative Side Waterproofing:
Interior side opposite the water pressure side of the structure Most commonly used in Remedial work, Elevator pits, Tank liners.
Blind Side Waterproofing:
Positive side applied prior to installing the structural walls or slabs. Normally inaccessible once the construction is complete. In many cases this is the only positive side waterproofing option.
